About Social Bookmarking with Delicious

What Is Is?

Delicious is a free, social bookmarking website that lets you store, tag (i.e. describe), manage, and share bookmarks on the web, instead of inside your browser.

What's Are Its Advantages?

  • It costs you nothing.
  • It allows you to access your bookmarks from anywhere (dorm room, home, off-campus study, etc.).
  • It gives you the power to share your bookmarks publicly, so your friends, classmates, professors, teammates, and others can view them for collaborative work, fun, information purposes, etc.
  • It has the option of allowing you to mark bookmarks as private (viewable only by you).

What Do I Need to Know to Use It In POLS 170?

You and your classmates will use Delicious to create a shared, annotated course “bibliography” or list of relevant resources. Resources can be free websites and web pages or bibliographic citations from subscription resources like JSTOR, WorldCat, and Academic Search Premier.

  • Go to Delicious and join it (i.e. create a free account).
  • If you're using your own computer, decide whether you want to import your existing bookmarks (optional).
  • If you're using your own computer, download the Delicious browser buttons for saving bookmarks (optional; this allows you to tag and save web pages to your Delicious bookmarks with a single click).
  • You will use a shared course tag to identify relevant resources for POLS 170. The tags to use depend on your group:
    • pols170ai
    • pols170hrc
    • pols170hrw
    • pols170iucn
    • pols170legal
    • pols170osce
    • pols170unep
    • pols170congo
    • pols170djibouti
    • pols170germany
    • pols170japan
    • pols170spain
    • pols170uruguay
  • Locate relevant resources on the web or in subscription databases like JSTOR. Tag them with the relevent pols170 tag or multiple tags (e.g. pols170congo and pols170hrw) and provide a brief description of why the resource is relevant. Be certain to share your resources for this course .... don't make them private!
  • Subscribe to the relvant pols170 tag(s) using your Subscriptions page in Delicious. "After you add a tag to your subscriptions, Delicious watches for everyone's bookmarks saved with that tag and delivers them to your subscriptions page."
  • Note: A shared course tag is public to the entire universe of Delicious users. In other words, any Delicious user could theoretically view all resources tagged by you and your classmates, if they stumbled on your tag.
