Here is a music video clip of Chilean folksinger Victor Jara singing "The Right to Live in Peace." One of the founders of the nueva cancion (new song), Jara drew inspiration from Andean traditional music and often wrote songs of social protest. He supported the Unidad Popular ("Popular Unity") coalition candidate Salvador Allende for the presidency of Chile. After the miliary coup d'etat in September, 1973, Jara was taken, along with thousands of others, as a prisoner to the Chile Stadium, tortured and killed.
The Chile Stadium was renamed the Estadio Víctor Jara in September 2003.
Video is courtsey of YouTube. Information about Jara is taken from Nettl, Bruno, Ruth M. Stone, James Porter, and Timothy Rice. The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music. New York: Garland Pub, 1998.
